Cancer survivors, patients, and caregivers gathered near the Las Vegas Strip to honor Nevadans affected by the disease, Wednesday evening. Lights of Hope was organized by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) to help strengthen its mission of reducing the cancer burden for everyone and shed light on public policies that would aid in the fight against cancer. The tribute included dozens of lit bags, each donning the name of a Nevadan that’s been touched by cancer.

A recent poll by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) shows 8 in 10 (85%) of voters in Nevada view a candidate’s position on access to affordable, comprehensive health coverage as a vote-determining factor. The poll findings showed voters in Nevada feel the current health care system is not meeting the needs of most of the state’s residents. Conducted by Public Opinion Strategies and Hart Research, this poll is a part of ACS CAN’s national Cancer Votes campaign—the country’s leading voter education program for cancer-related issues and policies.

LAS VEGAS, NEV. – The Nevada State Legislature passed Assembly Bill 155 as the 82nd legislative session adjourned, Monday. The bill establishes provisions for biomarker testing in Nevada but falls short of ensuring broader patient access to needed testing. While the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) appreciates lawmakers’ recognition of the growing importance of biomarker testing in the treatment of cancer and other conditions, this bill was significantly weakened from its original intent.
