U.S. Senate Confirms Dr. Marty Makary as FDA Commissioner

March 26, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yesterday, the U.S. Senate voted to confirm Dr. Marty Makary as the next commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

A statement from Lisa Lacasse, president of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) follows:

“From reviewing and approving innovative therapies, to being given the mandate to regulate the entire tobacco industry, the work of the FDA plays a critical role in the fight against cancer. With more than 2 million people in America expected to be diagnosed with cancer in 2025, the FDA must continue to apply its gold standard evidence-based approach to ensuring the safety and efficacy of medical treatments and interventions. Additionally, the FDA must use the full weight of its authority to remove illegal tobacco products from the market and ensure compliance with federal law to protect the public health from these harmful products.

“Advancing cancer science into implementation is critical to improving the lives of those at risk of cancer as well as cancer patients and their families and depends on ensuring the agency maintains scientific expertise and sustained resources. ACS CAN stands ready to work with Commissioner Makary and his team, as we have with all past administrations, to ensure that we continue making progress towards ending cancer as we know it, for everyone.”
