January 24, 2012 The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) together with AARP, the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, and Consumers Union sent a letter to the president today urging him to strongly implement a provision of the Affordable Care Act that would give consumers timely access to easy-to-understand information regarding their health benefit options. Congress passed the Summary of Benefits and Coverage provision because it concluded that the information available to consumers today is inadequate to make an informed decision about insurance coverage. The groups stressed that to implement the strongest provision possible, the Summary of Benefits and Coverage final rule should include multiple coverage examples, apply to all insurance plans in all markets, include important premium information and be implemented as soon as possible.
