South Carolina Session Review 2015

July 24, 2015

The South Carolina session concluded on July 9th.  ACS CAN followed several bills this year.  It was overall a very active year for cancer issues.

Best Chance Network Funding:  The Best Chance Network received $475,000 to provide breast and cervical cancer screenings for women in South Carolina.

Colon Cancer Screeenings:  The University of South Carolina Center for Colon Cancer Research received $200,000 to help with research and screening of colon cancer.

Cervical Cancer Screenings: The HPV vaccine bill failed to pass out of the House.  The Medical University of South Carolina has been hosting Town Hall meetings during the summer to help educate the general public on the importance of the HPV Vaccine.

Tobacco:  $5 million from the tobacco tax was protected.  South Carolina now has 61 smoke-free communities covering 39% of the population under a smoke-free law.

Medicaid Expansion:  There was a lot of talk about Medicaid Expansion this year but no deals were made to move forward.  ACS CAN is a member of the Close the Gap SC Coalition working to expand Medicaid in SC.
