Fight Cancer. Make Time. > Grace Charrier

Grace Charrier at the HillWhen Grace Charrier was diagnosed with breast cancer, her life changed dramatically. She transitioned from being a businesswoman to becoming a global advocate for cancer awareness, leaving a lasting impact on the cancer community.

Grace's influence on the world is significant as a United Nations Ambassador for Peace, Global Goodwill Ambassador, International Women's Day Ambassador, and an Iconic Woman Creating a Better World for All.

Recently, Grace became an honoree of the Aesclepius Medical Society, Inc. for her passionate and impactful cancer advocacy work. She also received a Citation from The Council of The City of New York for her exemplary service to the community and unique personal achievement.

Grace recalls her diagnosis now almost eight years ago. Her symptoms were not the usual signs of itches, rashes, or pain. When she had a terrible fall in her bathroom, the emergency visit to the hospital warranted a screening that detected her cancer. After finding her blood pressure to be 170/110 — significantly higher than average — Grace's physician immediately advised a series of tests.

The tests came back in the clear. But Grace paused when the physician inquired about the last time she had received a mammogram.

"I had never had a mammogram," Grace said. "In my entire life."

Two mammograms, two biopsies, one MRI, and a PET scan later, Grace was diagnosed with Stage 3 triple-negative breast cancer.

With no family history of health issues, Grace was in utter disbelief at her diagnosis. Had she known, Grace would've taken preventive measures. Early detection wasn't on her radar.

"Now, because of my experience, I make it a point of duty to keep it on as many people's radar as possible," Grace said. "I tell everyone that early detection is key to survival."

Though she regrets missing the chance to avoid toxic chemotherapy through regular screening, Grace is grateful for being here to tell her story.

As the host of her own YouTube show, Cancer Convos with Grace B, she brings experts and stakeholders to share insights on cancer, health topics, and life sciences in hopes of demystifying cancer for all. And at the peak of the pandemic, Grace published her candid memoir, "IMPOSSICANT!" where she shares her story to inspire others.

"In retrospect, I never set out to become a global cancer advocate," said Grace, but now she knows the power of her advocacy in raising all-important awareness and is dedicated to educating others. Having been a caregiver for a family member, she also mentors other caregivers who care for their loved ones.

Since her remission, Grace has made sure not a single moment has gone to waste—sitting on the dock of the bay, embracing her love for the water, and listening to all genres of jazz, gospel, Afrobeat, and classical music. She explores restaurants and new cuisines with her daughter (an "unapologetic foodie"), enjoys trips with her family, flies all over the world, and honors invitations to international health conferences.

Grace is taking advantage of the now.

"I am filled with unreserved gratitude to have commemorated so many milestones," Grace said. "I do not take it lightly."
