PROVIDENCE – April 21, 2025 – Advocates with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) join Rhode Islanders in mourning the loss of Senate President Dominick J. Ruggerio, who passed away early this morning.

During his more than four decades of serving in the Rhode Island legislature, Ruggerio championed efforts to improve public health and increase access to lifesaving cancer screening tests. In 2022 he was inducted into the Rhode Island Cancer Caucus, a prestigious honor bestowed by ACS CAN in recognition of his commitment to promoting legislation that improves the lives of cancer patients.

“We are incredibly saddened to hear of Sen. President Ruggerio’s passing, and we join countless others in sending our deepest condolences to his loved ones at this difficult time” said Ryan Strik, ACS CAN Rhode Island Government Relations Director. “Sen. Ruggerio was a resounding voice on so many issues critical to Rhode Islanders and will be sorely missed.”

“In his memory and in recognition of the projected 27,500 Rhode Islanders who will die from cancer this year, ACS CAN will continue to strongly advocate for public policies that reduce deaths and suffering from this disease and move us closer to a world without cancer,” said Strik.
