“We are deeply saddened by the passing of former U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey. On behalf of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, we extend our deepest condolences to the Lowey family and especially to her beloved husband, children and grandchildren.

“During Rep. Lowey’s tenure, she fiercely protected and consistently sought to increase funding for cancer and biomedical research. She kept cancer in the conversation on Capitol Hill well beyond appropriations, earning admiration and appreciation from cancer survivors and patient advocates throughout her district, New York State and the greater U.S.

“Nita Lowey was a resounding voice on so many issues critical to New Yorkers and will be sorely missed. In her memory and in memory of the projected 31,190 New Yorkers who will die from cancer this year, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network will continue to strongly advocate for public policies that reduce deaths and suffering from this disease and move us closer to a world without cancer.”
