Senate Passes Bill to Improve Sunscreen Product Review for First Time Since 1990s
WASHINGTON, D.C. September 18, 2014 Following is a statement from Chris Hansen, president of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), in reaction to Senate passage of the Sunscreen Innovation Act. The Act, developed in cooperation with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is intended to modify the process of review and approval of sunscreen ingredients, adding more predictability to the process and removing some of the procedural obstacles that have prohibited review and approval of new sunscreen ingredients for more than a decade.
The Senate took a critical step yesterday to fix a broken process at FDA for the review of new sunscreen ingredients that could potentially help more Americans prevent skin cancer. American consumers should have access to the broadest choice of sunscreens including those in use for years in other countries once they are shown to be safe and effective. We urge the House to quickly approve this important public health legislation, which will give the FDA the ability to more efficiently review pending ingredient applications, hopefully leading to improved sunscreens for U.S. consumers.
Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers with more than three million cases diagnosed in the United States annually yet, many skin cancers are preventable. It 's imperative that we take every avenue available to us to give Americans the tools they need to prevent a battle with skin cancer, and the Senate has paved a road for us to be able to make advancements in prevention.
