Nomination of Dr. Francis Collins as NIH Director Good for Cancer Research

July 9, 2009

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- July 9, 2009 -- “The cancer community applauds President Obama’s nomination of Dr. Francis Collins as the Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In this role, Dr. Collins would bring his scientific leadership and experience to one of the nation’s foremost medical and cancer research facilities. His background as an administrator at the NIH, especially his role in leading the Human Genome Project, gives him a rich and unique perspective that would be an asset in the job.

“This is a critical time for the NIH, which endured five straight years of frozen or cut funding before receiving a boost in funding earlier this year. We must continue to make the necessary investment in medical research to produce scientific discoveries that will continue our progress against cancer and other life-threatening diseases. With Dr. Collins as its leader, I am confident that the NIH will be in good hands and that we will continue to save more lives and create a world with more birthdays.”
