New National TV Ad Urges Congress to Make Cancer a National Priority

November 4, 2011

Washington, D.C. – November 4, 2011 – In an effort to make cancer a national priority with lawmakers, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is releasing its second-ever national television ad to ask Congress to remember the countless lives lost to cancer and the nearly 12 million cancer survivors living in America today when making decisions to address the budget deficit.

The ad, which is posted on the ACS CAN website, features the creation of a Wall of Hope in front of the U.S. Capitol that is made up of 1,584 sticky notes filled with real messages from people across the country to their loved ones who have battled cancer.

The ad will premiere on “Meet the Press” in the Washington, D.C. market on Sunday, Nov. 6 and air nationally on major cable networks including CNN, Fox NewsChannel and MSNBC in November and December as Congress and the deficit reduction “super committee” debate ways to reduce federal spending

“As the super committee considers reductions in federal spending, ACS CAN is working to ensure that putting an end to death and suffering from cancer -- a disease that kills 1,500 people in America each day -- is a top national priority for lawmakers,” said Christopher W. Hansen, president of ACS CAN, the advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society. “The decisions that Congress makes will have a major impact on the fight against cancer for decades to come.”

The new TV ad is part of a larger national grassroots campaign to protect federal funding for groundbreaking cancer research at the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute, lifesaving efforts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that promote the prevention and early detection of cancer, and laws and programs that expand access to adequate, affordable health care. ACS CAN’s grassroots advocates across the country are holding events that call on Congress to protect critical funding and further the progress already made against this disease.
