Kansas Legislative Session Ends with Missed Opportunity to Expand Medicaid

Lawmakers went home, leaving 150,000 Kansans stuck in the coverage gap

April 14, 2025

Statement from American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) Kansas Government Relations Director, Megan Word

TOPEKA, Kan. – “As lawmakers end the legislative session, they have once again failed to close Kansas’ health care coverage gap by expanding Medicaid, a policy that is overwhelmingly popular. Kansas lawmakers are leaving 150,000 low-income Kansas adults and families without access to affordable comprehensive health care coverage. This year, an estimated 15,810 Kansans will be diagnosed with cancer and having health insurance is the top indicator of your chances surviving. These are hard-working Kansans who don’t want a handout, they just want to see a doctor and get healthy. Kansas lawmakers must do better.”
