MADISON, Wis. – As Wisconsin lawmakers reconvene for the 2025 legislative session, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) looks forward to working with them to prioritize legislation to ease the burden of cancer on Wisconsinites.
This session, ACS CAN in Wisconsin will be prioritizing policies that focus on access to affordable health insurance, efforts that address prescription drug affordability, coverage of lifesaving cancer screenings and legislation that aims to improve health care quality and outcomes.
The following is a statement from Sara Sahli, Wisconsin government relations director for ACS CAN:
“Wisconsin is one of only 2 states that has not extended postpartum Medicaid health care coverage for new moms. We will be working with lawmakers to ensure Wisconsin joins the 48 other states that have extended postpartum Medicaid coverage to 12 months, a policy that supports new moms and has overwhelming support in our state.
“Additionally, Wisconsin is one of only 10 states that has not fully expanded Medicaid, leaving over 90,000 limited-income Wisconsinites from every corner of the state stuck in the health care affordability gap. An American Cancer Society study found that people living in Medicaid Expansion states under the Affordable Care Act had greater improvements in 2-year survival after a cancer diagnosis compared to people living in non-expansion states. ACS CAN and our volunteers look forward to working with lawmakers to advance policies, laws and regulations that will reduce cancer incidence and deaths in Wisconsin.”
