Harkin Amendment Would Restore Critical Funding for Cancer Research and Prevention Programs

March 13, 2013

WASHINGTON, D.C. March 13, 2013 The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is calling on senators to make cancer a top priority by voting to restore important federal funding for medical research and proven cancer prevention programs in the proposed FY2013 spending bill. An amendment to the spending bill to be offered by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) would begin to reinstate a small amount of the cancer research and prevention funding that has been cut over the past few months, first with the fiscal cliff legislationξ and more recently with the sequester. Christopher W. Hansen, president of ACS CAN, the advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society, sent a letter to senators today encouraging them to maintain the urgency of the fight against cancer, which kills 1,500 people in America each day, by supporting the amendment. Federal cancer research and prevention funding saves lives, and promotes high technology growth and U.S. leadership in one of the world 's most important and competitive industries, Hansen wrote. We should view it as an investment in the nation 's future that supports and contributes to the fight against a disease that has ravaged the world 's population since the beginning of history.
