HOUSTON, TX – October 14, 2021 – Earlier this week, Texas Gov. Abbott issued an executive order undermining vaccine requirements. Legislation was also filed with similar language that was heard in the House last night and is scheduled to be heard in the Senate today.

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society issue the following statement in reaction to these measures:

“Vaccine requirements help protect immunocompromised cancer patients, including kids. We oppose efforts like these that undermine evidence-based, public health policies and threaten the health of those facing cancer.

“The continued threat of COVID-19 to cancer patients is real and abundant. Many cancer patients and others with serious conditions may not get optimal protection from COVID-19 vaccination, and many are delaying essential care because of the pandemic. Public health measures like vaccine requirements play an important role in reducing the risk of COVID-19 to cancer patients and other immunocompromised people.

“The governor’s executive order and Senate and House bills also threaten to contribute to higher demand for COVID-19-related health care. Such actions jeopardize the health of all Texans — especially cancer patients whose lives often depend on safe, reliable access to doctors and hospital.

“For the good of all Texans, including the patients we serve, we urge the governor to withdraw his executive order and for the Texas legislature to reject the Senate and House bills. We urge policymakers to support proven public health strategies, including vaccine requirements.”
