Federal Exchange White Paper an Important Step Toward Ensuring Meaningful Access to Care

Statement of Stephen Finan, Senior Policy Director of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN)

May 16, 2012

WASHINGTON May 16, 2012 The information released today on the federally-facilitated health exchanges represents a positive step toward ensuring that people with cancer and their families nationwide have meaningful access to health care.

The federal exchanges should serve as a model for the consumer-friendly marketplace that the health care law intended, providing access to adequate, affordable health care options for people with cancer or who are at risk for the disease.

Seamless coordination between states and the federal government will be imperative to ensure that vital components of the exchange work well together, so patients have timely and transparent access to lifesaving health coverage.

For the states that will need to operate a federally-facilitated exchange having this initial guidance will help inform states on how to coordinate with the federal government to tailor their health benefit exchanges to meet the needs of their populations.

ACS CAN, the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society, supports evidence-based policy and legislative solutions designed to eliminate cancer as a major health problem. ACS CAN works to encourage elected officials and candidates to make cancer a top national priority. ACS CAN gives ordinary people extraordinary power to fight cancer with the training and tools they need to make their voices heard. For more information, visit www.fightcancer.org.
