Arizona Cancer Advocates Mourn Passing of Rep. Raúl Grijalva

Rep. Grijalva Passed Away at age 77 after Complications from Battling Lung Cancer

March 13, 2025

Advocates with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) join Arizonans in mourning the loss of Rep. Raúl Grijalva, who died Thursday after complications from battling lung cancer.

During his more than two decades of serving in Congress, Rep. Grijalva championed efforts to improve public health by advocating for the development of new health care clinics in Southern Arizona, as well as supporting efforts to increase access to care by co-sponsoring bipartisan legislation to aid in the fight against cancer.

During the 118th Congress, he co-sponsored HR 1826, the PSA Screening for HIM Act, a bipartisan effort aimed at removing cost barriers to prostate cancer screening. Grijalva also supported HR 247, the Nancy Gardner Sewell Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act, which aimed to give Medicare enrollees access to multi-cancer screening tests when benefit is clinically shown. In 2023, Grijalva also met with volunteer advocates from ACS CAN about supporting access to care policies.

“We are deeply saddened to hear of Congressman Grijalva’s passing from cancer. On behalf of patients, survivors, and caregivers in Arizona, ACS CAN is grateful for his work and commitment to improving access to care for Arizonans,” said Brian Hummell, ACS CAN Arizona Government Relations Director. “The congressman’s legacy will continue to impact generations of Arizonans. ACS CAN sends its deepest condolences to his loved ones at this difficult time.”
