Arizona Cancer Advocates Applaud Governor for Supporting Newly Unveiled Cancer Control Plan

State Outlines Five-year Strategy to Fight Cancer and Reduce the Cancer Burden

August 9, 2024

PHOENIX, ARIZ.– August 8, 2024 – Advocates with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) commend Governor Katie Hobbs for supporting the newly unveiled five-year Arizona Cancer Control Plan. The plan includes policy provisions that pursue additional resources for cancer patient navigation and cancer screenings as well as reinstating the historical leadership for the state in tobacco control policies.

The creation of this plan is timely. Cancer is now the second leading cause of death in the state of Arizona. According to the Cancer Facts and Figures report released annually by the American Cancer Society, more than 42,000 residents are expected to be diagnosed with cancer this year with more than 13,000 expected to die.

ACS CAN is the advocacy pillar of the American Cancer Society. The organization is also the nation’s leading nonpartisan, nonprofit voice advocating for policies and actions to reduce the burden of cancer. In response to the Cancer Control Plan, Brian Hummell, ACS CAN Arizona Government Relations Director released the following statement:

“Governor Hobbs’ introductory letter to the Arizona Cancer Plan demonstrates a passion to ensure Arizona responds to what can be done for all Arizonans to have better health outcomes. Our volunteers from ACS CAN look forward to pursuing the policy objectives outlined in the plan and encourage all elected officials to make cancer a priority.”
