ACS CAN Welcomes Dan Glickman to its Board of Directors
Former Cabinet Member, Lawmaker Joins Volunteer Leadership of Leading Advocacy Group Dedicated to Defeating Cancer
WASHINGTON, DC – September 17, 2014 – The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is pleased to announce the addition of Dan Glickman, the former the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, nine-term congressman and current executive director of the Aspen Institute Congressional Program, to its Board of Directors.
“Secretary Glickman’s breadth of leadership and experience in the public, private and nonprofit sectors is an enormous asset to ACS CAN’s efforts to support public policies that help prevent and treat cancer,” said Christy Russell, MD, ACS CAN Board Chair and Co-Director of the Norris Breast Cancer Center at the University of Southern California. “People with cancer and their families nationwide will benefit from Secretary Glickman’s contributions to ACS CAN’s lifesaving mission.”
Secretary Glickman’s term on the ACS CAN Board extends through December 2015. The Board’s unanimous vote Sept. 14 in support of his membership took place as more than 600 cancer patients, survivors and caregivers from nearly every congressional district nationwide gathered in the nation’s capital for the annual ACS CAN Leadership Summit and Lobby Day. Advocates met with lawmakers
Tuesday to urge Congress to protect federal funding for cancer research and prevention programs, support legislation that improves patients’ quality of life during and after treatment, and ensure that lifesaving colon cancer screenings are affordable for seniors.
“Secretary Glickman knows well that the compassion and commitment of a group of people dedicated to a cause such as defeating cancer can effect major change,” said John R. Seffrin, chief executive of ACS CAN, the advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society.
“Under the leadership of Secretary Glickman and our other volunteer leaders, ACS CAN will continue to build its nationwide organization of grassroots advocates and ensure the voices of patients are heard in policy debates that impact the fight against cancer,” said Christopher W. Hansen, ACS CAN president.
“Members of my family, like millions of others nationwide, have been treated for various forms of cancer,” said Glickman, whose brother is currently in treatment for prostate cancer. “I am honored to join the ACS CAN Board in support of the organization’s critical work to save lives from cancer.”
Glickman emphasized the roles of diet and nutrition in preventing diseases such as cancer and improving public health as the elected representative of the 4th Congressional District of Kansas in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1977-1995, a member of the House Agriculture Committee during his service in Congress, the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture from 1995-2001, and in his work since then. In 2012 and 2013, Glickman chaired an Institute of Medicine Panel on “Accelerating Progress in Obesity Prevention.”
As executive director of the Aspen Institute Congressional Program, Glickman leads the organization’s efforts to provide lawmakers with a stronger grasp of critical public policy issues by bringing legislators together with internationally-recognized academics, experts and leaders to explore various policy alternatives. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Bipartisan Policy Center, which was formed in 2007 by
former Senate Majority Leaders Howard Baker, Tom Daschle, Bob Dole and George Mitchell to develop and promote bipartisan solutions to the country’s problems and to promote civility in government.
Glickman served as Chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America, Inc. (MPAA) from 2004 until 2010. Prior to joining the MPAA, he was the Director of the Institute of Politics at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government (2002-2004).
