ACS CAN Urges Appropriators to Restore Sequester Cuts to NIH

Letter Says NIH Budget Should Return to At Least $31 Billion

December 19, 2013

Washington, DC -- Dec. 19, 2013 -- With a bipartisan budget deal in place, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is asking congressional appropriations leaders to fully restore the sequester's cuts to medical research and fund the National Institutes of Health at $31 billion or more. ACS CAN sent a letter to the chairs and ranking members of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees to provide the Labor-HHS Appropriations Subcommittees with a FY 2014 spending allocation that prioritizes cancer research and prevention programs. "Federal cancer research and prevention funding saves lives and promotes economic growth at a time when our country is determined to do both," wrote ACS CAN President Chris Hansen to Sens. Barbara Mikulski and Richard Shelby, and Reps. Hal Rogers and Nita Lowey. "These efforts are investments in our nation 's future that support and contribute to the fight against a disease that has ravaged the world 's population since the beginning of history."
