ACS CAN Statement on Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s Leadership Role In The Fight Against Cancer

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced she will not seek re-election to Democratic leadership.

In response, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network President Lisa Lacasse issued the following statement: 

“In the combined decade Speaker Pelosi has presided over the U.S. House of Representatives, she has played a key role in advancing critical legislation that has improved the lives of people with cancer, survivors and their families.

"Of particular note, Speaker Pelosi promoted support for robust and sustained investment in cancer research at the National Institutes of Health and National Cancer Institute; elimination of discrimination and increased access to affordable, comprehensive health care through passage of the Affordable Care Act; and advancement of evidence-based tobacco control laws that have encouraged adults to quit and prevented children from starting a lifelong, deadly tobacco addiction.

"On behalf of individuals and families impacted by cancer across this country, we applaud Speaker Pelosi for using her position in leadership to improve public health and reduce the cancer burden.”
