Healey Signs Bill to Address Breast Cancer Screening Inequities
Legislation will eliminate costly barriers to follow up breast cancer screening
The Illinois General Assembly today approved a one-year budget allocating $13.5 million to the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program. It now moves to the governor’s desk for further consideration. Heather Eagleton, Illinois government relations director for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, released the following statement in response:
“After years of negotiations, we are thrilled to see our lawmakers finally reach a long-term budget deal that fully funds IBCCP. ACS CAN thanks the General Assembly for prioritizing this lifesaving program, and we urge Governor Rauner to approve this budget.
“With more than 10,700 Illinois women expected to be diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer this year, we cannot emphasize IBCCP’s importance enough. Its early detection services give low-income, uninsured women a chance at surviving a cancer diagnosis when the disease is at a more treatable stage. Many of these patients have no alternative resource for cancer screenings or treatment, so we must ensure IBCCP funding is a long-term priority.
“ACS CAN again thanks the lawmakers who championed IBCCP funding. We urge Governor Rauner to sign this budget into law and help Illinois women access the cancer care they need.”
