South Carolina Legislative Update
Week Ending January 13, 2012
Tuesday, January 10th, marked the first day of the 2012 South Carolina legislative session. This session is scheduled to conclude on Thursday, June 7th. Because this is the second year of a two-year session, legislation failing to pass this year will be null and void. We have two new members of the House of Representatives for a total of 124, and 46 members of the Senate. As 2012 is an election year for both chambers, the General Assembly is expected to be conservative and pro-business.
Agency budget hearings begin the week of January 17th. Governor Haley has proposed a $5.7 billion dollar budget, which represents a 4.5% increase over the current budget.
