A letter from Sherry Jasperson, State Lead Ambassador, ACS CAN Nevada

July 6, 2016

Seniors on Medicare in the United States are at risk and you can help by making just one phone call!

Because of a loophole in Medicare, seniors who have a colorectal screening with removal of a polyp could wind up with a bill of $300 or more.  Polyp removal is a proactive measure reducing the chance of developing colorectal cancer.  Seniors on a budget are more likely to pass on this vital cancer screening if they face the possibility of high costs if a polyp is found during their routine colonoscopy.

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is urging our U.S. Senator Dean Heller to co-sponsor a bill that will remove the loophole, potentially saving lives.  So far, Senator Heller has not stepped up to look out for Nevada's seniors, but we are hoping to convince him.

On July 12th, I will be flying to Washington DC with another Nevada ACS CAN volunteer to meet with the senator and let him know why he needs to take action.

How can you help? Call Senator Heller NOW and ask him to co-sponsor S624, the Removing Barriers from Colorectal Cancer Screening act.  Let him know that cancer matters to you, that volunteers from Nevada will be meeting with him next week and that you want him to listen to what they have to say.

The numbers below are for Senator Heller's offices in Nevada.  If you live in the south, call the Las Vegas office; in the north, call the Reno office.

Please call Senator Heller's office NOW!

Las Vegas: 702-388-6605702-388-6605

Reno:          775-686-5770775-686-5770

This year alone 1,100 Nevadans will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer, and 470 will die of this devastating disease.  This important legislation will ensure that every senior on Medicare has access to lifesaving colorectal cancer screening regardless of their ability to pay.

Thanks so much for your help!
