Healey Signs Bill to Address Breast Cancer Screening Inequities
Legislation will eliminate costly barriers to follow up breast cancer screening
KAILUA-KONA, HAWAII – June 22, 2023 – The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) recognizes and applauds Governor Josh Green for signing HB907 into law, Thursday morning. Once enacted, the legislation will improve access to audio-only telehealth to help ensure cancer patients and survivors have access to the appropriate medical specialists they may need.
Cynthia Au, ACS CAN Hawaii Government Relations Director, and Grassroots Manager, issued the following statement in response to the Governor’s signing:
“More than 8,000 people are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in Hawaii this year. Many of those who are diagnosed will reside within communities currently being underserved when it comes to access to care and treatment. Telehealth increases access to quality care, especially for those living in rural areas with limited broadband access.
“The American Cancer Society recently surveyed people about telehealth services. More than half of participants noted having a phone visit with a telehealth provider about an issue related to their cancer care. ACS CAN is committed to reducing the cancer burden for everyone. Telehealth services can assure cancer patients and survivors have a much-needed lifeline when questions arise, or care is needed.
“Audio-only telehealth is a step toward improving health equity and outcomes on neighbor islands and rural communities. Our organization celebrates Gov. Green for taking notice and signing HB907 into law.”
