South Dakota Votes To Go Smoke-Free

November 3, 2010

South Dakota became the 23rd state to go 100 percent smoke-free Tuesday night when voters overwhelmingly cast their ballots in favor of a comprehensive statewide smoke-free law. The new law will extend a restriction on indoor smoking to include all bars, restaurants, casinos and video lottery establishments, and give every worker the right to breathe smoke-free air on the job. South Dakota's smoke-free law was supposed to take effect in July 2009 but was delayed after opponents referred it to the ballot. The law will now take effect Nov. 10 following the Secretary of State's certification of election results. The final vote was almost 65 percent in favor of the smoke-free law.
