Nearly 20 years ago, a U.S. Federal District judge found that the major cigarette manufacturers violated civil racketeering laws for deliberately defrauding the public.
“It is a really big watershed in terms of the industry actually coming clean for the first time ever about the health effects of smoking,” said Mary Rouvelas, senior counsel to the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, in an interview with NBC News.
For decades, Big Tobacco lied to the American people about the health effects of smoking. Finally after 17 years of lawsuits and negotiations, Big Tobacco has to come clean and tell the truth by running advertisements in major newspapers and on television stations.
