Health Advocates Showing Their Power!

November 11, 2010

On November 10, 2010, health advocates rallied in front of the State House to show their power as part of a Power of the Purse Rally.   During the rally Advocates urged the Governor and the members of the Maryland General Assembly to restore funding for important life-saving cancer and tobacco control programs because they hold the purse strings.  Funding was cut drastically in previous years.

The event has had a great crowd of supporters and an awesome line up of speakers representing many organizations- The American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, American Lung Association, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Health Care For All, The MD Skin Prevention Program, Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults, Zeta Phi Beta, Smoke-free Holy Grounds, Smoke Free Maryland and Tobacco Free Kids.

During the Rally, Tobacco Free Kids announce poll data from a new statewide survey showing that a strong majority of Maryland voters support using tobacco settlement and tobacco tax revenue to restore funding for the state’s program to prevent kids from starting to smoke and help smokers who want to quit.
