While the financial costs are astounding, the real price we pay from tobacco use is with our health: heart disease, cancer, lung disease — to name only a few of the terrible, life altering diseases that smoking causes directly. Without action to reduce smoking among young people, 56,000 kids now under 18 in our state will ultimately die prematurely from smoking. That should be cause enough to fight back against the tobacco industry and it’s the reason why major public health organizations including the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, American Heart Association, American Lung Association, MATCH Coalition and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids are all calling on Hartford to pass this legislation.
