January 26, 2016

First Meeting of Maine’s Palliative Care Advisory Council

AUGUSTA – January 26, 2015 – This week will mark the first meeting of Maine’s Palliative Care and Quality of Life Interdisciplinary Advisory Council. The meeting will aim to develop a working definition of palliative care in Maine, set Council goals, and have a period open for public comment and media inquiries. The public is invited to attend.

The advisory council was created last year after the passage of “An Act To Improve the Quality of Life of Persons with Serious Illnesses.”

The goal of palliative care is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family. It is provided by a team of doctors, nurses, and other specialists who work with the patient’s primary care physician and other physicians providing disease treatment to provide an extra layer of support. It is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness and can be provided along with curative treatment to help patients get well faster and easier.

WHO:             Maine Hospice Council, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), patient advocates, medical professionals, lawmakers, and sufferers of chronic disease. Open to the public.
