Fight Back this January and Welcome New Lawmakers

January 1, 2013

Cancer effects us all, but no one is truely powerless in the effort to end this disease. Now is your chance to Fight Back and let your voice be heard.

This month, a new Congress and a new President will be sworn into office. This is the perfect time to let your newly elected officials know that cancer should be a top national priority, and to remind those that are returning to office.

Welcome Your Newly Elected Officials
January is the perfect time to meet with newly elected Members of Congress to introduce them to our organization and legislative agenda. Meetings may take place in the Member's district office or in an American Cancer Society office. Consider working with your local Society staff partner to let local media know about your meeting. In areas where a meeting cannot be scheduled, a packet of materials could be dropped off at the Member's district office.

Send a New Year's Card to Returning Legislators
Handwritten, personal greeting cards will have a big impact on your elected officials - and it's easy! Simply pick up a box of cards at your local pharmacy, and address them to your state and federal lawmakers. Where appropriate, you may want to add a personal note thanking them for their record of concern for cancer issues.

Submit New Year's Resolutions to Your Local Paper
Personalize this list of New Year's resolutions for your lawmakers and submit it as a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. Writing a letter to the editor is an effective and easy way to reach a large audience with your message. Letters to the editor are printed on the editorial page, which is one of the most read pages in the paper. Talk to your local American Cancer Society staff partner for assistance.
