MADISON, Wis. - The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) gathered in Madison Tuesday with cancer survivors and advocates to sit down for coffee with Senator Tammy Baldwin.

As a part of their Cancer Votes program, ACS CAN called on both U.S. Senate candidates, Baldwin and Hovde, to sign the “Cancer Promise” and clearly state their commitments to fighting cancer in Wisconsin and the U.S.

ACS CAN sent its “Cancer Promise” pledge to both candidates and got them to pledge to support cancer research funding, ensuring access to affordable, quality health coverage and ensuring access to cancer prevention services.

Advocates at the event stressed the importance of bipartisan teamwork in the fight, noting that cancer hits everyone regardless of political party.

“That bipartisan approach means that individuals understand that cancer is something that we need to eradicate, and that it does not matter what political party you belong to, what is critical is that we are united in the fight,” said Debra Nevels, an ACS CAN volunteer and cancer advocate.

This was the first of the two meetings, Hovde committed to scheduling his meeting in the near future.
