American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network Reacts to Governor’s Budget
Columbus, Ohio – February 2, 2015 – This statement can be attributed to Jeff Stephens, director of government relations in Ohio for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN).
“The proposed health investments in Governor Kasich’s budget will improve the health of all Ohioans and make Ohio’s economy more attractive and competitive.
“One-third of all cancer deaths are tobacco-related. Therefore we strongly support Governor Kasich’s proposal to increase cigarette taxes by $1.00 per pack, and to equalize the tax on other tobacco products. Additionally, his continued investment in tobacco prevention and cessation efforts are proven ways of reducing tobacco use and we strongly support these measures.”
“ACS CAN also applauds Governor Kasich for his continued investment in the Breast and Cervical Cancer Project. This program provides vital cancer screenings, such as mammograms, to low income uninsured women in our state.
“Additionally, ACS CAN commends the governor’s proposal to reauthorize the investment in Ohio’s Medicaid program. The resulting access to screenings and life-saving treatments will translate to better health care outcomes for Ohio citizens.”
For more detail on the governor's proposed tobacco control package and why we support it, please see the joint statement with our partner health organizations via the “Investing in Tobacco Free Youth” campaign.
