Environmental Bond Act Promotes Cancer Prevention by Providing More Venues for Exercise, Reducing Emissions from Dirty Diesel

Statement from Dave Momrow, Senior Vice President of Cancer Control,
American Cancer Society of NY & NJ, regarding the proposed Environmental Bond Act.

“The proposed Environmental Bond Act represents another weapon in the fight against cancer. Creation of new parks, improved bicycle paths, and better facilities will lead to more physical activity – and increases in physical activity can result in reduced cancer rates. Each year, 11,000 New Yorkers die from cancers caused by obesity and lack of physical activity.

Also, emissions from vehicles, especially diesel buses have been scientifically linked to increased lung cancer risk. By providing local governments with grants for the purchase of cleaner vehicles – including school buses, transit buses and sanitation trucks – and better emissions control devices for older vehicles, that risk will be greatly diminished.

These are investments in a brighter tomorrow that will save taxpayers future healthcare dollars by encouraging healthier lifestyles that include more exercise and cleaner air.”
