This week, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action NetworkSM (ACS CAN) is sponsoring a photo exhibit in the rotunda of the Russell Senate Building in Washington, D.C. featuring several signature panels and photos from the 2008 Fight Back Express bus tour. The exhibit also features testimonials and portraits of real people burdened by the cost of cancer. The Russell Senate Building is one of three Senate Office Buildings located just north of the U.S. Capitol Building, and is frequented by Senators, Capitol Hill staff and constituents alike.
The ACS CAN Fight Back Express tour was the largest grassroots mobilization campaign ever waged on the issue of cancer. The six-month cross country tour covered more than 44,000 miles, visited all 48 contiguous states, gathered 100,000 signatures, and generated extensive press coverage. The panels on display are filled with signatures of people who cared about the issue of cancer and wanted to see improved access to care. In all, there were a total of 630 panels collected. Also on display are highlighted photos of the ACS CAN Fight Back Express traveling through the streets of Chicago, Washington, D.C. and even right past Mount Rushmore. For more information about the ACS CAN Fight Back Express tour, visit www.fightcancer.org/bus.
The exhibit is taking place in conjunction with ACS CANÈs State Lead Ambassador Lobby Day on July 15. Top advocacy volunteers from all 50 states will meet with their legislators to advocate for accessible, affordable, available and administratively simple health care that will guarantee all Americans the treatment they need, at a cost they can afford. Lawmakers and visitors to Capitol Hill will have the opportunity to walk through the exhibit all week through July 17.
