Session Summary
The 2021 Florida Legislative Session was one of the most unique in state history. With the world working to corral a pandemic, elected officials were committed to progressing the states work, even if it was in an alternative format. There was a fair amount of controversy, including a bad "Tobacco 21" bill which led to many of our advocates reaching out to state officials time and time again. Through it all, you did a great job reaching out to legislators and making your voices heard.
We are happy to report that we were successful in stopping all cuts from our priority research and prevention programs. We appreciate all the work you did to help educate members on the importance of these programs and the need to protect their funding.
Mary Brogan Breast & Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program - The Legislature approved total state funding of $1.83 million. This marks the ninth year in a row that the Legislature has invested state dollars in the program.
Biomedical Research - James & Esther King Biomedical Research Program was appropriated $10 million and the Bankhead-Coley Cancer Research Program $10 million. Pediatric cancer research was funded at $3 million for a total of $23 million allocated for biomedical research.
Tobacco Prevention and Education - The Tobacco Free Florida program is slated to receive over $73 million for the coming budget year.
