The ACS CAN Washington State Policy Luncheon is a premiere event that brings together more than 300 leaders from business, academia, health care, government, life sciences, and cancer research communities to support ACS CAN’s mission.
ACS CAN and our sponsors are thrilled to welcome former Governor Christine Gregoire as our keynote speaker.
As the state's Attorney General in the late-1990s, she led the fight against tobacco companies and worked tirelessly to secure the Master Settlement Agreement. These dollars enabled Washington state to fund tobacco prevention and control programs for the next decade. This resulted in cutting our state's smoking rate in half by the mid-2000s. However, as Governor in the late-2000s, she was forced to sweep these dollars to the general fund in order to balance the budget during a time of economic uncertainty, a decision from which our now-underfunded prevention program has yet to bounce back.
Building on the success of Tobacco 21, ACS CAN is focusing our grassroots power on increasing funding for the Youth Tobacco & Vapor Product Prevention Program at the Department of Health. Having been severely underfunded for nearly a decade, during which time youth usage of e-cigarettes, or 'vaping,' has skyrocketed to epidemic levels, the time is now to invest in prevention programs and protect the next generation.
