On December 3rd, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) will host, in virtual format, our 5th annual forum in Connecticut to examine the current impact and future potential of clinical trials in cancer care, with a focus on disparities and barriers for patient participation.
Focus of the Forum
This event will examine the importance of cancer clinical trials and the key barriers that result in approximately 20% of cancer clinical trials never beginning due to lack of enrollment. Overcoming these barriers and increasing cancer clinical trial access to disparate populations will ensure that cancer research becomes more efficient, reducing the time and effort needed to translate basic science discoveries into meaningful therapeutic advances that benefit all patients. Forum participants will include key stakeholders throughout the oncology community, including leaders in life sciences, health care systems, academia, provider groups, patient advocacy, public policy, business, and others. ACS CAN will use this event to help illustrate and explore the following:
-
Are current eligibility criteria preventing willing patients from enrolling in trials? What still needs to be done?
-
What role do healthcare institutions play in clinical trial enrollment and success?
-
What improvements need to be made so that disparate populations have access to clinical trials.
-
What is the long-term impact of COVID-19 on clinical trials;
-
How do everyday issues, such as location, transportation, childcare affect access for patients to potential new treatments through clinical trials.
-
The work ACS CAN is doing to increase access to clinical trials.
