What is an ACS CAN Palliative Care Policy Forum:  This event, being held on September 22nd at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel, is dedicated to educating patients, providers, public policy makers and the public about palliative care.  The forum will address the issues most important here in Colorado.  Possible areas are:

  • What is palliative care, what specific treatment practice areas are included and how does it work?
  • Why is such care important to patients, providers and insurers, and what are some of the best practices?
  • What policy changes would help expand the use and benefits of palliative care?
  • How can palliative care be better integrated into our health system?

Why:  We have seen significant progress and advances in medicine that have meant many of us will live longer – and also live better – even in the face of serious illness like cancer.  Helping patients and their families achieve these dual outcomes – longer life and higher quality of life – is a key objective of palliative care and a high priority for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN).

Over the last decade, palliative care has been one of the fastest growing trends in health care.  This patient-centered approach to chronic disease has the potential to deliver better care, better outcomes and lower costs at a time when our nation needs it most, yet public awareness of palliative care is almost non-existent.  A Lack of understanding about palliative care – of both what it is and when it should be provided – remains as one of the chief barriers preventing access to it.
