We are asking lawmakers to invest $12 million in programs to fight tobacco use in Connecticut
Comprehensive, well-funded tobacco control programs help prevent youth from starting to use tobacco products and support and promote cessation among current tobacco users. ACS CAN recommends that states dedicate a portion of tobacco tax and other tobacco-related revenue for tobacco control. However Connecticut is falling short, providing ZERO funding in the current state budget.
The Numbers:
- $2.03 Billion - Annual health care costs directly caused by smoking
- $473.2 million - Amount of tobacco revenue and tobacco settlement funds CT receives annually
- $55.9 million -Estimated amount the tobacco industry spends on marketing in CT each year
- $32 million - Amount the CDC recommends CT spend on tobacco control each year
The Toll
- 4,900 adults will die in Connecticut from smoking in 2021—13 per day.
- 1300 kids will become new daily smokers—over 3 per day.
- 12.1% - Adults who smoke in CT
- 28.7% - CT High School Students who use tobacco
Connecticut ranks last in tobacco control spending when compared to other states. For years we have spent ZERO dollars on tobacco control efforts. It is time for that to change.
