How long you have been involved with ACS and/or ACS CAN?
I joined ACS CAN in November 2021 so about a year now.
Your cancer patient, survivor, caregiver, and/or connection story:
I was raised by my grandfather growing up and he passed away while I was in high school to stage four lymphoma and diabetes related complications. I’ve since then dedicated myself to researching cancer. I’m a 3rd year PhD student at City of Hope Medical Center where I research brain cancer (glioblastoma).
Why health equity is important to you and/or why you are founding member of this group?
Health Equity allows us to understand how disease manifests and affects racial/ethnic groups in different ways. Understanding how cancer behaves differently due to someone’s racial genetic makeup can allow scientists and medical doctors to develop better therapies to treat their patients.
I am a first generation Mexican American and the first in my family to pursue a graduate degree. My hobbies include hiking, baking, cooking, and traveling when I can.
