On April 18, the Montgomery County Council unanimously approved Bill 1-17 that will expand healthy drinks and snacks offered in county vending machines. West Virginia’s Senate passed a bill that would prohibit those under 18 from using indoor tanning devices in the state. This follows the lead of the House of Delegates which overwhelming passed the bill late last month. The bill will move to the Governor this week.

New Mexico

New Mexico does not allow anyone under the age of 18 to buy tobacco because it is a known carcinogen. However, under current state law, teens can use tanning devices even though the World Health Organization has classified them as “carcinogenic to humans” – the same category in which they classify tobacco. A bill to change that is headed for a vote by the full House of Representatives this week.
