State Colon Cancer Screening and Awareness Program Bill Moves Forward!

February 16, 2017

Since the fall of 2016, ACS CAN Hawaii-Pacific has been collecting petitions and stories in support of a state colorectal cancer screening and awareness program.

We are pleased to announce that on January 20, 2017, the opening day of the Hawaii State Legislature, Sen. Rosalyn Baker introduced SB 398, which if passed, would create the colorectal cancer screening and awareness program within the Department of Health and appropriate funds for the program.

On February 1, 2017, a hearing was scheduled with the Senate Committee on Commerce, Consumer Protection and Health. At that hearing, ACS CAN State Lead Ambassador Holly Ho-Chee-Dupont, ACS CAN Ambassador Gary Tanimitsu and volunteer Esther Maniago shared their stories and urged the committee to support the bill. Sen. Baker, Chair of the committee, passed the bill out where it will now move go through Second Reading before being heard by the Senate Ways and Means Committee
