ACS CAN reacts to Governor Walker’s budget proposal

February 10, 2017

Madison, Wisc. (Feb. 9, 2017) – Gov. Scott Walker released his proposed budget yesterday. Sara Sahli, Wisconsin government relations director for American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), issued the following statement in reaction:

“The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network is pleased that the governor’s proposed budget maintains funding for important cancer prevention and early detection programs. Wisconsin’s Well Woman Program provides free breast and cervical cancer screenings to low-income, uninsured women across the state. The Tobacco Prevention and Control Program, which funds the Quit Line, has helped reduce youth tobacco use and provided cessation services to thousands of Wisconsinites. These services are critical to preventing cancer or catching it at an earlier, more treatable stage.

“We urge the legislature to protect these lifesaving cancer prevention and early detection services and maintain full funding of these programs in the final budget.

“Ninety people are newly diagnosed with cancer every day in Wisconsin. Programs like these are essential to support the people who hear this life-changing news and to do what we can to lower that number.”

ACS CAN, the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society, supports evidence-based policy and legislative solutions designed to eliminate cancer as a major health problem.  ACS CAN works to encourage elected officials and candidates to make cancer a top national priority. ACS CAN gives ordinary people extraordinary power to fight cancer with the training and tools they need to make their voices heard. For more information, visit www.fightcancer.org.
