Louisiana State Lead Ambassador

Kathy Judge

LA SLAWhy is being an ACS CAN volunteer important to you?

In the 1990's I had the heartbreaking experience of watching cancer take the life of my healthy and strong 26 year old brother. Kevin fought the disease for 1 1/2 years but this time cancer won. In his memory my brothers and sisters and I decided to volunteer for the American Cancer Society. We became active in Relay for Life by raising funds to assist ACS in fulfilling its mission. This volunteer activity helped us turn our grief into action.

Through the years I began to take advantage of advocacy opportunities as they became available. I began to understand just how important it is to have an effect on public policy and to volunteer in the legislative arena. When ACS CAN was formed I was ready!

Why should others in your community get involved in ACS CAN?

Cancer is pervasive, it touches almost everyone. In my family of 9 siblings we have had 2 skin cancers, 3 breast cancers, 1 lymphoma, and 1 death due to maglinant schwanoma. I know of other families with similar stories.

The good news though is that we do have survivors, and the number of survivors is increasing. We need everyone to unite to let our legislators (local, state, and federal) know that cancer is an issue that needs to be addressed. The more voices we have the stronger the message becomes.

What is your proudest accomplishment as an ACS CAN volunteer?

My produest accomplishment is my personal growth. I have learned so much from other ACS CAN volunteers and from the CAN staff. It is truly an honor to be associated with this organization.
