Oregon City Supports Statewide Ban on Flavored Tobacco Products
OREGON CITY, OR — Oregon City has taken a stand against flavored tobacco products by passing a resolution on Wednesday that calls for an end to their sale.
To commemorate the 35th Great American Smokeout on Thursday, ACS CAN is calling on state lawmakers to combat the countryÈs tobacco epidemic with strong policies that encourage youth and adults not to smoke. Comprehensive smoke-free policies, including smoke-free workplaces, tobacco tax increases, and funding for tobacco cessation programs, help smokers quit and encourage others never to start. The use of tobacco products remains the nationÈs number one cause of preventable death, killing approximately 443,000 Americans and costing $96 billion in direct health care costs each year. Yet, a new report co-authored by ACS CAN shows states are not doing all they can to help tackle tobacco use. State funding for tobacco prevention and cessation programs is at its lowest levels since states began receiving tobacco settlement payments in 1999. The Great American Smokeout is a platform to encourage Americans not only to quit smoking, but to advocate for comprehensive tobacco control polices that are proven to curb tobacco use.
