New Comprehensive Smoke-Free Law in Delaware County, Indiana

June 7, 2011

On June 6, the Delaware County Board of Commissioners unanimously adopted a comprehensive smoke-free workplace ordinance. Testimony was given by many members of the health community, including Michael Kelley, a lung cancer survivor and American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network member that worked for years in smoke filled car assembly plants. The secondhand smoke he was exposed to on the job resulted in his lung cancer, a message he delivered to the Delaware County Board of Commissioners.

In 2006, the Delaware County Commission passed a smokefree ordinance that was one of the weakest laws in Indiana. The old ordinance exempted bars and private clubs while allowing for smoking rooms in restaurants. The adopted ordinance makes all enclosed workplaces, including bars and restaurants, smokefree. The new ordinance will take effect on August 11, 2011.
