2011 Legislative Session Update: Affordable Care Act Implementation

The 2011 legislative sessions in the states were busy for many reasons,ξmuch of whichξhas to do withξimplementation ofξthe Affordable Care Act.ξ We wanted to update everyone on the progress the states have made on implementing state health insurance exchanges.ξ To date:

  • The governors of 11 states(CA, CO, CT, HI. IL, MD, NV, OR, VT, WA, WV) have signed bills into law to establish a state health insurance exchange since the Affordable Care Act was passed in 2010.
  • The governors of fours states(GA, IN, MS, RI) have issued executive orders to establish a state health insurance exchange since the Affordable Care Act was passed in 2010. RI's governor also took the additional step of naming the individual members of the exchange's Governance Board.
  • The governors of six states(AL, AR, MT, ND, VA, WY) have taken steps or signed legislation to move the exchange process forward without actually establishing a state health insurance exchange.

Implementation of the Affordable Care Act will continue to be a priority for states in 2012.ξ We will keep you updated as we receive more information.
