Why an Influential Oklahoma Lawmaker is Championing Palliative Care in His State

March 11, 2015

As a member of his party's leadership team, Oklahoma State Representative Pat Ownbey has no shortage of people calling on him to champion their issues.

That's why ACS CAN was so grateful he chose to lead an effort to help improve the quality of life for cancer patients and people with chronic conditions.

Palliative care will "help people in chronic conditions have a better quality of life," Ownby said in a recent interview.

His bill directs a key state health council to "to identify ways to improve the quality and delivery of palliative care,Š— according to a state summary of the bill.

Thanks to his efforts, the bill passed unanimously in the Oklahoma House of Representatives, and Ownby says he expects similar support in the State Senate and from Governor Mary Fallin.

Watch Rep. Ownby's two-minute interview discussing why he is making patient quality of life a top issue in his state.
