Dissapointing Delay in Tobacco Tax Case

May 10, 2011

Statement from Russ Sciandra, New York State Director of Advocacy for the American Cancer Society regarding a newly issued restraining order barring New York State from collecting taxes on the sale of cigarettes to non-Indians on Seneca Nation land
"We are disappointed that the state court decided to grant an injunction barring the state from collecting taxes on cigarettes sold on Indian reservations until June 1st.  Every delay means more New Yorkers suffer and die from cigarette addiction.  The highest cigarette tax in the nation, combined with tax collection on reservations could result in more than 182,000 people who will quit smoking.  The positive public health impact of collecting this tax would be enormous, with the added benefit of reduced health care costs for our state."
