ACS CAN Names Hart New York State Government Relations Director

ALBANY, NY – August 17, 2015 -The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) has named Julie Hart of Delmar, NY as New York State government relations director. In this post Hart will oversee advocacy efforts promoting evidence-based policy and legislative solutions designed to eliminate cancer as a major health problem.

Previously, Hart served for eight years as director of government relations for the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) in New York State.  Hart has also spent time working in the state executive and assembly offices during which she played an integral role in drafting  New York State’s precedent setting 2003 Clean Indoor Air Act, which prohibits smoking in all places of employment including bars and restaurants.

“New York State is facing crucial health care issues, including the availability of lifesaving cancer screenings to the underinsured, the health threats caused by the use of e-cigarettes and the need for increased funding for tobacco cessation and prevention programs,” said Bill Sherman, vice president of government relations of the Eastern Division of the ACS CAN. “Julie brings us a wealth of experience in advocacy, government and public policy to help ACS CAN work to save lives and diminish suffering from cancer. She has led successful campaigns that have resulted in crucial legislation and regulations that currently protect all New Yorkers and has maintained positive relationships with state leaders in all levels of government and advocacy.”

“ACS CAN works every day with government leaders and volunteers to help defeat cancer,” said Hart. “I am excited to be part of this powerful, important team and look forward to advocating our evidence- based, life-saving policy proposals to our government leaders.”

Julie Hart can be reached at [email protected] or at (518) 449-5438 extension 1.
